Today on Twitter, @kidambition asked about the Kodak Zi6 HD Pocket Video Camera and how it compared to the Flip Video Mino. I’ve done a few reviews of the Kodak Zi8 and the Kodak Zx1 in the recent past, so I thought I’d take a moment and talk about the Kodak Zi6.
This camcorder is extremely similar to the Flip Video Mino HD camera on a few points. They both shoot 720p HD video and both lack image stabilization.
The Flip series has built in USB adapter (so there are no cables). The Kodak Zi6 uses interface cable. The Kodak Zi6 also has removable rechargeable batteries, which is nice.. and the Flip Mino has to be charged via USB. The other advantage of the Zi6 is the ability to change the video quality (HD at 60 fps, HD at 30 fps, or VGA) and the super great advantage of having SD memory allowing you to store 32GB.
This is a good camcorder, but if you’re looking for image stabilization and true 1080p HD, I would look at the Kodak Zi8 as another option. Either way, this is very comparable to the Flip Video Mino HD.

The Kodak Zx1 HD Pocket camcorder is another “shoot and share” type mini-camcorder which are extremely popular. Similar to the Flip Video series, these cameras shoot in HD, but at 720p vs 1080p, and are extremely easy-to-use, basically point and shoot. This camera also has USB interface allowing for easy transfer of video footage to a computer/laptop. This particular camera has rubberized doors to protect all ports and is resistant to rain, snow, sand and dirt which is a nice feature.
Currently (September 25th, 2009) this camera is normally listed at $149.00, but is on sale for a great price of $119.82!!

The other day @kidwithoutmusic asked me what I would recommend for a HD camcorder int eh $100 to $300 price range. I recommended that Flip Series or the new Kodak Zi8 HD are worth looking, but @kidwithoutmusic also threw in the Creative Labs Vado HD. I remember reading and posting about Creative Labs Vado HD 8GB Pocket Video Camcorder about a month ago, so I thought I’d take a closer look at this camcorder.
First glance, it’s very similar to the Flip Mino with simple controls and display on one side, and the lense on the other. It shoots in 720p like the flip (2 hours of HD footoage), but also offers VGA resolution.. which can give you 8 hours of footate. Interesting that you can shoot in standard definition. It also has USB built into the unit, but also has a removable and rechargeable lithium battery. So the real two large differences I’m seeing over the Flip Mino is the ability to record in Standard Def and the ability to have a removeable / rechargeable battery. Both cameras have 2x digital zoom as well. The Flip Mino is a little cheaper, but I would expect some sales and offers on this camera in the future.

A couple of days ago I posted a review of the Panasonic HDC-HS250-K HHD HD Camcorder, and today I found another great camcorder, with fantastic features, and is currently selling at a great value. This camcorder is the VIXIA HF200 HD Flash Memory camcorder with 15x optical zoom by Canon.

I had a few conversations with a Tweep (@SeerMax) about good camcorders, and she was interested in picking up the Panasonic HDC-HS250-K HHD HD Camcorder (with 120 GB drive). I wasn’t familiar with this camcorder, so I thought I’d take a look at this camera. Holy cow.. is this a nice unit!
This is going in a different direction than the mini-camcorder or shoot-and-share camcorders I’ve been talking about lately. SeerMax and I initially talked about the quality and durability of the more consumer/convenience based camcorders and it was agreed that the durability is often questioned. When we start to go to higher-end equipment and up to professional grade equipment, we definitely see improvements in the craftsmanship and inclusion of upper-end components that make these units last longer and perform better. Obviously, I need to put a gigantic asterisk next to this, since it always depends on the camera, the brand and model you get as well as what you’re exposing the gear to.
This camera looks absolutely fantastic and having a 120 GB drive is nice. It shoots in true 1080p HD and can shoot 11MP still photos. I saw one mention where it was advertised that it can do time-lapse, and apparently, this is not true. If anyone else can comment on this, that would be great.
Currently this camera lists at $899.95, but at the time of this post, you can purchase this camera for $762.26 after savings and you can also get a FREE Polaroid ProGo Printer!

I was glad to see the Sanyo Xacti VPC-E2 digital camcorder. I personally like mini-camcorders, and this was one that I haven’t had a chance to write about yet. It does not shoot HD video, but records at full 640×480 resultion at 60 files per second. The one great feature that stands out to me, is that it’s waterproof! So in a way, it’s similar to a POV camcorder where you can take it anywhere, but it’s not a true POV since you can mount it (well.. you probably could if you wanted to). This camcorder is also a 8MP digital camera as well, which is conveninent.
Currently at Amazon, they’re offering this camera for $169.99 (down from $199.99) which saves you 15% on this purchase. This is limited to the blue camera only.

I’ve been writing a few articles about POV (Point of View) cameras. These types of cameras are extremely fun and innovative for unique video content. But when I see 50% off on anything, I have to get excited. Here we have the ATC2K waterproof action cam. It normally is $99.99 dollars, but you can get it currently at Amazon for only $49.99! That is a deal!
