I see that Amazon is having a clearance sale on Standard-Def (not HD) Flip Mino Camcorders. This is a great opportunity for gifts. Eventhough these camera  are not HD, they shoot great video and are perfect for videos on YouTube, etc. Recently, with all the hype on the Apple iPod Nano and it’s video capabilities, I wrote a post showing Flip Mino SD’s quality was still much better over the Apple iPod Nano. Please check out that post!

Amazon’s standard-definition Flip Mino camcorders are going fast, you’ll need to act quick, since the supplies are limited. Normally, these cameras are listing at $184.99, but are selling around $99.99 (46% off) and I believe all the camera are shipping for with FREE super saver shipping. I think these could be great Christmas or birthday gift! Please click here to view the various Flip Video camera models offered in this clearance sale.

Flip Mino (Standard Definition) shoots 60 minutes of video and records to internal 2 GB on-board flash memory. It has 2x digital zoom. Comes with USB swing arm for easy charging and access to computers. Certain models come with plug-in AC adapter (so please verify that). The adapter is not necessary, but is nice. Normally the Flip cameras recharge over the USB, but the adapter makes it nice is a computer is not immediately available.

Yesterday @hallapunk asked via Twitter about the Canon FS200. I love it when people ask me about camcorders. I love doing some of the research when I’m not familiar with a particular make/model. So today, we’re going to take a closer look at the Canon FS200 Flash Memory Camcorder.

Canon is a great brand, and everyone knows this. This camera is compact, has great zoom capabilities (37x optical zoom), and records direct to Flash Memory which is very nice. The camcorder normally lists at $329.99, but is currently on sale for $267.18 which includes FREE super saver shipping.

The camcorder has image stabilization capabilities, but only shoots in standard definition (this is not a HD camcorder). Like many camcorders it can take digital stills. The view screen appears to be quite large while the overall camera size is small and looks very easy to use. I would personally prefer a HD model, so if you wanted to take it to the next level, the Canon VIXIA HF200 which I talked about last week might be a better fit.

To see some image quality tests, please scroll down to the bottom and view the video there.

Flip has introduced their 2nd generation Flip Mino HD camcorder.  The 2nd generation has a new look and some additional new features.

First of all, the look has changed from sleek black to brushed-metal front and soft, rounded edges. The improvements include a 2″ anti-glare color display. The original Mino had a 1.5″ display. The largest change is the memory. They’re now supplying the Mino with 8 GBs of memory. The original Mino could only hold 4 GBs. Additional they’re offering a HDMI output so you can connect directly to HDTVs.

If you purchase this camcorder you can get a Free Flip Accessory! With this new camcorder, if portability is priority as well as memory, this camera seems to be a better buy vs. the Flip Ultra HD. You still have the advantage of the recharageable batteries in the Ultra over the rechargeable Lithium-ion battery of the Mino, but that is a pretty small advantage since you can get adapters for the Mino to charge without a computer.

So to get in the spirit of Halloween a friend of mine contacted me and asked what would be a good camcorder for ghost hunting. I thought this was a odd question, but quite interesting, so I start to look around for him. The requirements for a good ‘ghost hunting’ camera is a camera with night shot. Apparently Sony’s are the only camera around that have Night Shot, please correct if I’m wrong, but it surely seems like it.

The next factor to include is the camera is capable to have extended IR (infrared) lighting available and what media it records it video too. You can record to tape, DVD, harddrive or flash media. Since price was a factor, tape was the cheapest, and I found the Sony DCR-HC52 MiniDV Handycam Camcorder. Oddly I reviewed this a few months ago (not ghost hunting related).

This is a great little camera. Here is where they have to say about the NightShot feature:

NightShot Plus Infrared System In low-light environments, the NightShot Plus Infrared System lets you shoot color video with a less greenish tint than previous infrared systems.

If you need additional IR illuminator, check out this page out for brackets and night vision lights for the camcorder.

You can pick this camera up for around $200 on Amazon. It’s an older model, but could serve well on a chilly ghost hunt. If you have any other recommendations for a ghost hunting camera, please drop me a email or comment on this post!
