A few days ago, I posted the differences between the Flip Video Mino and Ultra HD camcorders and a visitor to the site was very interested in these cameras so he could do some video blogging of musical instruments and gear. He mentioned this to a few of his friends, and couple recommended the Sony Webbie (and I’m presuming it was the MHS-PM1 since it’s somewhat similar to the Flip Video), so I thought I would post about this particular camcorder.

I found this interesting video where a guy compares the Sony Webbie HD MHS-PM1 against his Panasonic SDR-S7 camera and by doing so exposes some of it’s features and limitations, that I could see being applied against the Flip Video series.

Number one he mentions the rotating lense on the Sony Webbie, which makes it very nice to film yourself while being able to view the screen. You cannot do this with the Flip Video models (unfortunately). He also exposes the ‘noise’ related to grip on the Webbie, which I can see becoming a issue depending on the application.

Here is the video:

What are your buying points when it comes to purchasing a new Camcorder? When I ask this to myself, it’s a hard question, so I wanted to post this and see what other have to say.

I personally feel it’s all related to the purpose or goal of buying a camcorder in the first place. Basically, what are you trying to achieve with this camera? Do you want a good all-purpose camcorder, are you looking for something that produces professional quality video, are you looking for something easy to use, etc?

These goals all have different buying points related to them. Buying points could be, but definitely not limited to, size, weight, brand, HD/SD, resolution, image stabilization, zoom, options, ease of use, compatibility with hardware/software, etc.

I think others can greatly benefit if people would comment on this post about their recent camcorder purchases. Please add the following

  1. What was the intent for buying the camcorder (the purpose/goal)
  2. What was the camera you bought
  3. What were the buying points for you picking up this particular camera

I’m looking foward to what you have to say!

Currently there are two versions of the popular Flip HD cameras on the market. Those are the Flip Video Ultra HD and the Flip Video Mino HD. There are the SD models as well, but for this comparison, we will only be talking about the HD (Hi Definition) models.

The Flip Mino HD is a slimmer version compared the Ultra. It is thinner, smaller and weighs less than the Ultra. These definitely have it’s advantages, and the primary one being very easy to transport. The Mino is a little larger than a cell phone, so sporting one in your pocket is a snap. Charging the Mino is restricted via USB charger from laptop or desktop computer. There are no chords to worry about. This can be a great, but also a hindrance if you’re looking to charge your camera and you’re not close to a USB device.

The Flip Ultra being larger has it’s advantages has some advantages. As mentioned above, the Mino is restricted to USB charge only. The Ultra has double A rechargeable battery pack, and if the rechargeable batteries are drained, you can insert standard alkaline batteries in it’s place.

Having a larger chassis allows it to have a larger memory capacity as well. The Flip Mino holds 60 minutes or 4GBs of storage, while the Ultra doubles that with 120 minutes at 8GBs of drive memory. The physical cover materials are different as well. The Ultra has a matte finish that resists fingerprints and the Mino has a glossy plastic finish that can get pretty smudged up.

The Ultra also has a built on HDMI out so you can plug directly to your HD capable TV without a problem. The camera does NOT come with the cable though.

The video quality is basically the same between the two. They both record 720p video at h.264 compression and both cameras do not have image stabilization capability. The Ultra does have additional processing video refinement and uses a newer built-in software giving the video quality edge the Ultra.

The interesting aspect, is the Ultra is actually cheaper than the Mino. So you have to ask yourself if portability is a issue or image quality? If portability is a issue you might want to go with the Mino, while the video capability is close, the Ultra has the edge in the category.

Below is a great video showing the different aspects of both models.

I’m very excited to post this review. I purchased this camera for my wife about a year ago, and I can’t believe how perfect this camera is for capturing great family moments! It is unbelievably easy to operate. A big red button to record, how can you make it any easier? The size is great as well. It can easily fit in your pocket and be out in a moments notice. One of the biggest buying points for me was the interface. No cables, no power adapter, it is ALL handled via USB. I always have my laptop near by, so no problems transferring files or powering up the camera. I was also very impressed with their software. It was easy to use and quite good. Normally, I rarely look at the tools that come with the camera, but they’re quite good. I like to post videos on Facebook and YouTube as well as send videos to family and friends via email. This program easily converts these for you in formats and filesizes that are perfect.

Flip Ultra HD VS Flip Mino HD

I believe the need to have a few improvements on this. It has limited zoom capability and the anti-shake stability feature is pretty rough yet. But really, I have to say that this camera is the best camera I’ve ever used in the family setting. Very hassle free and a great value. I highly recommend this camera to my friends and family members.
